Foreign Guests

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

No seriously I don't know.

I can't take full credit for this idea; I found a book in my basement a few months back that I'd never really looked at called 'The Greek News', an educational mock newspaper. XD One of the articles explained democracy in the context of a few Greeks entertaining their Egyptian guests who found politics incredibly boring. (Of course they would, they don't have to worry about politics! What Pharaoh says goes.
Of course, around the time democracy started popping up Egypt was under foreign rule as mentioned here. I'll get to that in a sec.

SO FIRST OF ALL for those of you just joining me, these are the personifications of Athens, Thebes (Egyptian-Thebes, known to his Egyptian friends around this time as Niwt-imn.), and Memphis (Who also goes by Men-nefer, among other things.)
It's the 5th century BC when Athens was at its peak (getting pretty full of himself) and Egypt was under Persian rule. If Memphis had mentioned the Persians, this entire comic would be ruined because Athens would explode with anger and rage and drag his navy off to Persia and try liberating Egypt on the way.
In short, no one really likes Persia.
Who I haven't introduced yet. I'll get around to that, promise. Persia is pretty awesome.

IT MIGHT INTEREST YOU TO KNOW that the joke Athens is telling is a real ancient Greek joke that inspired that Monty Python sketch. You know the one. [link]
Egyptians and Greeks get slave jokes. It's one of the few things they have in common. XD (The Greeks were famous for democracy, but don't think for a second there weren't slaves. Who do you think mined all that silver for Athens' navy? Athens?)

I have no idea if blue himations were popular or even possible. XD Whatever, if it's hip, Athens has it.
The Egyptians wore even less clothes than the Greeks for obvious temperature-related reasons. For those reasons, Egyptian fashion barely changed over three thousand years. Still, it was important that your clothes were bleached white, like white teeth today. The richest Egyptians could afford linen woven so fine it was almost see-through.

Memphis is eating a sweetmeat.
I've tried making them before. Either I screwed up or I really don't like the taste of sweetmeats, at least not the ones made with sesame seeds.

I was thinking about looking back on this strip and thinking about how little character I'd given Thebes- he hasn't even mentioned anything death-related- oh, wait, yes he has. xD

I will probably be covering Athens' adventures with Solon-the-emo-poet I mean Solon-the-Father-of-Democracy
I'm just bitter because I didn't get a very high mark when I wrote an essay that mentioned him. XD It was because I had a lot on my mind at the time, okay?! XD

Oh, and the Egyptians didn't win any revolts that century as far as I'm aware.
One last thing, in the final panel Memphis' wig is slipping off. Hee hee hee.

For all the time I spent on this you'd think it would look nicer. Ah well, enjoy. I hope you learn things about stuff. :D
*goes back to watching Horrible Histories*
