57. Sobek

Sobek: Egyptian God of Crocodiles, Military, Power, Protection and Fertility

YEAH. I'M DOING IT.
I'M SO DOING ~hiyayaka's 100 GODS AND GODDESSES CHALLENGE. There are a couple of other cool challenges she's made, like the 100 Creatures Challenge and the 100 Flavours Challenge.

YEEEEEEEEEAH I wonder how long this will last. XD

With the help of a random number generator, I have started (coincidentally?) with #57, Sobek!

He's an interesting guy because of his duality between good and evil- sometimes he's shown assisting Set, and sometimes he helps out Horus.

Most people believe that he developed and became a popular god because everyone is scared out of their minds of crocodiles and if there's anything you can do to stop them attacking you, you should do it. Make Sobek happy, and the crocodiles will be happy and hopefully won't eat you. Crocodiles were often connected with the pharaoh because they represented fear and intimidation as well as strength and protection.
In places like Arsinoe (nicknamed "Crocodopolis" or "Croc-Town" by the Greeks, haha) crocodiles called Petsuchos (Greek for "Sons of Sobek") would be kept in temples. These tame little guys would be covered in jewels and fed honey and the best pieces of meat in order to appease Sobek.
The way I see it, you can cover Sobek or his kids in as much gold as you want- he doesn't really care. When it really boils down to it, the only thing you can really appease him with is food. When he's full, he's a pretty amiable guy. When he's not, a piece of steak might be the difference between your life and someone else's. XD

NOW AN EXPLANATION FOR THIS PICTURE.
Herodotus- that old totally trustworthy gent- once said that there was a symbiotic relationship between the Nile Crocodile and the Egyptian Plover- the plover would pick out bits of meat and leeches from the crocodile's mouth.
This of course, has never been proven.
I just thought it would be funny to see Sobek trying it out. XD

YEAH OKAY maybe I'll pick another number later.
