Description
Obligatory 2012 Comic
As far as we know, neither the Mayans nor the Aztecs ever said anything about 2012 being the end of the world. We do know that the Mayans measured eras in b’ak’tuns, which are roughly 394 years. Today is the end of the 12th b’ak’tun and the beginning of the 13th. The suggestion that the end of a b’ak’tun might have been a cataclysmic event for the Mayans was merely one interpretation by a scholar, but there is no definitive proof that the Mayans believed that. In fact, it was more likely that they saw it as a new beginning and would have celebrated it much like we celebrate a new century or millennium.
Today is also considered a lucky day of rebirth by the Aztecs, as it is a part of the year when rain is common- good for plant growth. This time of the year was celebrated with blood letting, some sacrifices, and men abstaining from sex.
Needless to say Maya and Aztec are a bit shocked at how different the modern reaction is.

Love it. Can't tell you how many idiots I've seen who believe the Maya are dead and gone... sigh.
